Cancer Council Australia welcomes Tanya Buchanan as CEO

Cancer Council Australia is delighted to welcome Tanya Buchanan as our new Chief Executive Officer, commencing today.
Tanya is an experienced public health professional who began her career as a nurse, working in oncology and neurosurgery. She has also worked for the Red Cross Blood Service Australia, in academia, local government and the voluntary sector.
Tanya also brings experience and an impressive track record as CEO of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) in Wales from 2006-2011. In 2011 she was awarded the Leading Wales Award in recognition of her leadership in tobacco control and the voluntary sector. In addition, Tanya was admitted as a Member of the Faculty of Public Heath by Distinction for her contribution to public health in the UK.
Currently, Tanya is completing a PhD in tobacco control at the University of Wollongong, has an MBA in Health Services Administration, a first-class honours degree in English and Comparative Literature, and a B.Sc (Nursing), along with a range of vocational qualifications.
For the past five years Tanya has been CEO of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand where she was particularly gratified to be given the opportunity to tackle lung disease head on. Embarking on her new role with Cancer Council Australia, Tanya said, “I am now excited to be joining Cancer Council Australia and work across every area of cancer. 2020 is a landmark time for public health and Cancer Council Australia has a critical role to play”.
