Prof Carson arrived in the Northern Territory in 1979 and served as a specialist General Surgeon in Darwin from 1990 to until retirement from clinical practice in July 2020. His clinical and research interests covered a wide range of surgery, but in more recent years concentrated on Territorians with Breast, Endocrine and Thoracic Cancers. He has undertaken multiple roles both in the Territory and nationally including Director of the Division of Surgery and then the Department of General Surgery at the Royal Darwin Hospital for 1991-2005 and Associate Professor of Surgery at the Flinders NT Medical Program from 2002 and ongoing. He was the Chair of the Northern Territory Cancer Care Network 2015-2020 and has been a member of Cancer Australia - Indigenous Cancer Leadership Group and co-chair of the Medical Oncology subcommittee in the Commonwealth’s MBS review process.
