Cancer Council CEO joins NHMRC

Cancer Council Australia CEO, Professor Ian Olver, has been appointed as a new member of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Chair of the NHMRC Australian Health Ethics Committee.

Professor Olver, who has over 25 years experience as a medical oncologist and researcher, is one of 13 new members of the Council, who will join the Chief Medical Officers of the Commonwealth, states and territories to lead the NHMRC through the 2012-2015 triennium.

"I look forward to the challenge of chairing the Australian Health Ethics Committee," he said. "It is important that the community has the confidence that the ethical implications of the rapid expansion of research in areas such as the human genome have been thought through and that researchers have efficient ethical frameworks to facilitate research to the benefit of our community."

Professor Olver is also a member of the Advisory Council for Cancer Australia (the Federal Government's cancer control agency), a number of grants and ethics committees and holds several honorary academic and clinical posts.
