Professor Tom Reeve AC CBE

Tom Reeve AC CBE is an Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the University of Sydney and has a long history of involvement in oncology practice, research and cancer policy in Australia.

Starting out in general practice, Professor Reeve went to New York to complete his training in General and Thoracic Surgery. He returned to Sydney and worked as a Surgical Research Fellow in the Unit of Clinical Investigation at Royal North Shore Hospital. 

In 1961 he was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery, The University of Sydney. Based at Royal North Shore Hospital, he advanced the Thyroid Unit, thus strengthening the Endocrine Surgical Unit. He was Chairman of the Northern Sydney Health Area, having previously chaired the Surgery Department at the University.

On retirement, Professor Reeve became President of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and held a role in Best Practice and Quality activities. His appointment as Executive Officer by the Australian Cancer Society (now Cancer Council Australia) saw his involvement in the development of Best Practice Guidelines in Cancer. He has also been a member of the Board of Management of the NHMRC National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre.

Professor Reeve developed a still active database in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery commencing in 1957.  He also continues to publish papers in refereed journals.

An expert in his field, Professor Reeve was awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire - for services to Medicine in 1973 and a Companion to The Order of Australia in 1994 "For service to medicine and to academic and clinical surgery, particularly in the field of endocrinology".
